Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Water

SDG water indicators

Summary of SDG 6 indicators and UN agencies responsible for each. Source: UN.

The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals - from No Poverty (#1) to Partnership for the Goals (#17) - are meant to set the global development agenda through the end of this decade. Goal 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation - includes 8 targets and 11 indicators, which collectively address a range of water issues, from drinking water to water-use efficiency. For the global status of each indicator, visit the UN SDG6 Data site, where you can also create maps showing values for each country.

Target Indicator
6.1. Drinking water: By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all. 6.1.1. Drinking water access: See Chapter 16 of the book.
6.2. Sanitation:  By 2030, achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations. 6.2.1. Sanitation access: See Chapter 16 of the book.
6.3. Water quality: By 2030, improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally. 6.3.1. Wastewater treatment
6.3.2. Ambient water quality
6.4. Water scarcity:  By 2030, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity. 6.4.1. Water-use efficiency
6.4.2. Water stress: See Chapter 5 of the book.
6.5. Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM): By 2030, implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate. 6.5.1. IWRM implementation
6.5.2. Transboundary cooperation
6.6. Aquatic ecosystems: By 2020, protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes. 6.6.1. Aquatic ecosystems
6.a. International funding: By 2030, expand international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries in water- and sanitation-related activities and programmes, including water harvesting, desalination, water efficiency, wastewater treatment, recycling and reuse technologies. 6.a.1. International funding: See Chapter 16 of the book.
6.b. Local participation: Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management. 6.b.1. Local participation
