Chapter 14. Drinking Water, Sanitation, and Health: Water 3.0

“View of the water celebration on Boston Common,” Samuel Worcester Rowse, 1849. Courtesy Boston Athenæum. The arrival of “city water” as a public service was an important milestone in the development of Boston and other American cities.

This chapter explores drinking water and sanitation systems in high-income countries, especially the US, with a focus on water quality issues. It addresses questions such as these:

  • What are the links between water and infectious disease?
  • How have urban water and sanitation systems developed historically?
  • What steps are involved in providing safe drinking water and sanitation?
  • How well does the US water/wastewater system work?
